FROM MAIN STREET TO MALL
On Sunday September 27 the Greater Oneonta Historical Society will host historian Vicki Howard, who will speak about – and sign – her new book at the History Center, 183 Main Street, between 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
Professor Howard has written From Main Street to Mall: The Rise & Fall of the American Department Store, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Bresee’s Oneonta Department Store has an important role in her book, which is considered to be the first national study of the department store industry. Howard states, “My book looks at the forces behind the rise of our Wal-Mart world, examining the role played by consumers, department store industry leaders, and government policies.” She is Associate Professor of History at Hartwick College, and the author of Brides, Inc.: American Weddings and the Business of Tradition and co-editor of the journal History of Retailing and Consumption.
The event is free and open to the public. The History Center will be open on September 27 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. For more information, contact info@OneontaHistory.org or 607-432-0960.
